Wood or wood products such as pallets, dunnage, crating, packing blocks, drums, cases, load boards, pallet collars and skids are a common food source and shelter for some pests. These wood and wood products are commonly used in protecting, supporting and/or carrying a commodity during exporting and importing of commodities. As a result, there is a great risk of introducing foreign pest species into different countries. To reduce this risk, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) under Food and Agriculture Organisation has developed an international standard known as the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) #15, also known as Guidelines for Regulation Wood Packaging Material in International Trade. This standard requires all wood packaging materials to be treated with approved measures of methyl bromide fumigation or heat treatment. Wood packaging materials that have been subject to these approved measures should display a specified marking on them.
